Ep. 284 - Trees in a Changing Climate

Climates have always changed but thanks to human activity it is happening at an ever-increasing rate. For sessile organisms like trees, this often means either adapting in place or risk going extinct. However predicting the outcomes of climate change on life is extremely challenging and differs depending on what kinds of plants you're looking at and where you are studying them. This is where people like my guest come in. Angie Patterson is a PhD student at Columbia University and she is studying how climate change is affecting trees like the red oak (Quercus rubra) that are important components of the forests in which they grow. Angie's research bridges the gap between the molecular scale and the global climate scale in order to help better understand and predict the future of these trees. Angie is also an educator, teaching everyone from children to the elderly about her work and how climate is going to affect the ecosystems upon which all life relies.
